Has anyone had trouble producing ferrofluid where the magnetite never synthesizes? I'm following the directions posted on an About.com article.
http://chemistry.about.com/od/demonstrationsexperiments/ss/liquidmagnet.htmAfter mixing the ferric chloride and the ferrous chloride, I slowly stir in the proper amount of ammonia, but the solution just becomes a brown slurry with black specks. Is there a better way to produce the ferrofluid than this method? I need to produce about a quart, and most of the websites selling it premade want $30 for only 10mL.
Thank you in advance for any *delete me*
