Multistep synthesis

How can I synthesize the above product?

Does adding 1. KCN + H3O+ 2. Phenol work?

Try counting the carbons after your first step ;)

I would oxidize the benzyl alcohol to carboxylic acid (KMnO4 KOH,H2O) then transesterification (phenol)

+ I think you should change carboxylic acid to acylchloride by adding SOCl2 or PCl3, PCl5 ..., before react with phenol. This way has the higher yield, but not cheap !
+ In other way, you would reactivity phenol to phenolate (PhONa) before it react with carboxylic acid !

^ He's right, it slipped my mind that its at the carboxlyic acid bad LG, you should convert to acyl chloride
