Little Something On Smoke bombs
« on: May 26, 2007, 03:29:16 PM »
 I like the Chlorine Tablets and Vegi Oil smoke bombs the best because pound for pound they produce way more smoke then the others

If you think you can top the Chlorine Tablets and Vegi Oil smoke bombs let me know. O yea there are some down falls of using chlorine smoke bombs.... the smoke is EXTEMLY TOXIC and when mixing chlorine tablets and oraganic compounds ( desiel, oil, rubber alcohol, etc...) a Hypergolic solution is formed

does anyone know the equation for KNO3 AND SUCROSE SMOKE BOMBS ARE?

About smoke bombs...
Using reaction stoichiometry you can find the amount of KNO3 needed to combust Sucrose, or C12H22O11. First, find the number of moles of O2 needed to combust 1 mole of sucrose.
C12H22O11 (sucrose) + 12O2 --> 12CO2 + 11H2O
So you need 12 moles of O2 to combust 1 mole of sucrose.
Potassium Nitrate, or KNO3 usually decomposes to give off 1 mole of O2 for every mole of KNO3 according to the following reaction...
KNO3 + heat --> KNO + O2
So you need 12 moles of KNO3 to combust 1 mole of sucrose (12 moles of oxygen needed to combust sucrose divided by the 1 mole of oxygen each mole of potassium nitrate gives off)
12 moles of KNO3 is about 1213.2 grams and 1 mole of sucrose is about 342.0 grams. So a 1213.2 : 342.0 ratio (Potassium nitrate : Sucrose) is optimal for a smoke bomb.
