A few basic questions.. organic chem high school course
« on: June 02, 2007, 11:00:00 AM »
I was told to do a bunch of things for an assignment this weekend and i'm pretty much clueless..

For a few synthesis reactions... by Sn2
a) diethyl ether
b) 2 butanol

for a i think it is formed by ethanol but i'm not sure... since they're the same molecule can they be considered nucleophilic

for b i'm completely lost..

then i'm told to predict the product of an Sn2 reaction with S-2-iodohexane with OH- and SCH2CH3-...

i'm fairly sure the nucleophiles attack the iodine in each case producing I- ions but i'm not sure about the strucutre

any help is appreciated :)

For part a:

You are correct about using ethanol. And nucleophilicity doesn't change "if they're the same molecule".

Have you thought about the reagents that you need to use?
