Help. Purification of DCC.
« on: June 05, 2007, 06:29:41 PM »
Hi,  I'm new to the forum.  I would like to ask if anybody knows of a way to purify DCC.  I have been gifted 2 older bottles (500g) of DCC and if it's possible, I would like to purify it.  The DCC is hard and requires chiseling to collect it.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Marvin

I've never purified DCC - but I do know it is a sensitizer.  You should wear appropriate protection (gloves, lab coat) and handle the material in a fume hood.
As I recall the DCC I used was always a solid mass that had to be chiseled out of the bottle.  Have you checked its purity to know that it needs purification?

DCC contains DCU as an impurity. So dissolve DCC in DCM and filter the solution becoz DCU will not dissolve In DCM, then filterate distill off completely under reduced pressure.

DCC has a relatively low melting point (34 deg C), and i've heard of DCC being purified by vacuum distillation (according to wikipedia, bp. 122 deg C/atm). If you just want to purify a little (<5g per run) as required, i'd use a kugehlrohr oven. they excel at this sort of thing.
