calculating the ion concentration
« on: July 19, 2007, 05:54:21 PM »
calculate the hydrogen ion concentration when o.32g of nitric acid is dissolved in sufficient water to make 0.050 litres of final solution.

i knw that a litre of water is 1.0 x 10-14 mol2 litre-2

HNO3= H+ + NO3-

from wht i can work out theres
2 moles of hydrogen
1 mole of nitrogen
1 mole of oxygen
(correct me if im wrong)

someone please give me some pointers....any help would be greatly appreciated

No idea what you are talking about... Something like Kw, but garbled to the point when it is unrecognizable.

This is simple strong acid pH question, IMHO all you have to do is to calculate concentration and use pH definition.

1)  How many moles of nitric acid is in 0.32 g or nitric acid?
2)  Is nitric acid a strong acid or weak acid?
3)  How many moles of hydrogen ions are produced from one mole of nitric acid?
4)  How many moles of hydrogen ions are produced from 0.32g of nitric acid?
5)  Divide the number of moles of hydrogen ions by the volume (0.050L) to determine the concentration of hydrogen iosn.
