Okay what does it mean when something looks like this:

What do the lines above and below the line connecting CH3 to CHO mean?

There's only 2 carbon atoms listed. So the carbon would have to have a triple bond and then 3 hydrogens attached.

Sometimes carbons aren't explicit in a structure. For example, see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alkyne#Terminal_and_internal_alkynes
They may have just written out the methyl explicitly (as some people do).

Hey thanks guys, this makes sense now. It wasn't in our notes and I couldn't find it drawn like that in the textbook so I was confused. Thanks again!!
