Two quick organic questions...
« on: October 04, 2007, 07:21:32 AM »
Hello everyone,

I just had two quick questions I am struggling with on a problem sheet.

1. Which common laborator solvents cannot be used in reactions involving maleic anhydride
2. The Diels Alder adduct is treated with a dilute KMn04 solution, the colour of the solution changes from purple to colourless. Explain.

Any help anyone could give would be great! Thanks,

John

1. Anhydrides react with protic nucleophilic compounds such as water, alcohols, amines and so on.
2. If the KMnO4 is reacting with (oxidising) the double bon in your adduct what is happening to the KMnO4? If something gets oxidised something else gets reduced. What might cause that colour change?
