I am having trouble understanding what oxidation numbers to give to certain things. For example, HPO3 is a problem that I have (I know that the answer is +5) ,and I can't seem to understand why that is the answer. H3PO2 oxidation number is +1. The question is asking to indicate the oxidation number of phosphourus. Why does the oxidation number change? How do you know when to change it? I have looked on the "List of Oxidation Rules," but I can't seem to understand it. The way I understand the list, "P" would get the same oxidation number with all elements.
