phencyclone information
« on: October 18, 2007, 07:02:29 AM »
I can't seem to find a reaction that I did in a experiment in lab.

rxn=>

9,10 - Phenanthrenequinone + 1,3-diphenyl -2-propanone + dry methanol => Phencyclone

I know that it's a elimination reaction but other than that...

I need to find out the theoretical yield and I don't know the ratio of the reactants or products..
I can't find it on the web from my searchings..

and does anyone know what is dry methanol?? What's the difference between it and normal methanol..couldn't find info on that either..

Thanks

"Dry", or Anhydrous refers to the level of water in the solvent.  Dry solvents are usually very low water percent, and they are used in reactions that are very water sensitive.

For example, Histological Grade Methanol 98% has total impurities of <0.5% water

Or, Anhydrous Methanol has total impurities of <0.002% water

Wiki has a little blurb about anhydrous solvents, nothing huge, but enough to explain the basic idea.

EDIT:  Sorry I can't be more help on the actual reaction, but I thought I'd pipe about the dry methanol.

This is a concerted pericyclic reaction known as a Diels-Alder reaction.  A conjugated diene and a dienophile react in a concerted mechanism or circular electron pushing event and the result is the formation of a new ring with a new site of unsaturation.  Your reagents should be 1:1 so calculate your theoretical yield from either reagent.  The molecular weight of the product should be the sum of the two starting reagents. ;)

Try to find some "phencyclone" synonyms.  Maybe "cyclone" or "tetracyclone" or "tetraphenylcyclopentadienone?"

Is phencyclone represented by one of these (left or right)?

Yes it is actually. Exactly the compound in the picture given on my lab sheet.
The only picture to be exact.
