In the balanced equation for the reaction where dichromate oxidizes aq. HCl to chlorine gas, the number of waters is (acidic solution)...
Can someone help get me started by writing out what this equation even looks like..
to me it seems to be Cr

Perhaps you are not close yet, but you are definitely on the right track. The main problem now is that there is no reduced chromium on the right - and I suggest you use Cl

, not HCl (remember this is strong acid, fully dissociated).
