As I am working on my homework assignment (which sadly totals over 100 problems @_@ i am noticing a few questions in where I am having trouble in figuring out the solution. Please any help would be greatly appericated!)
45) Assume that coal can be represented by the formula C135 H96 O9 NS.
a. What is the percent of nitrogen by mass in coal?
b. If 3 tons of coal were burned completely what mass of NO would be
produced? Assume that all of the nitrogen in the coal is converted
to NO.
c. Would the mass of NO calculated in part b be the maximum
amount of NO produced in this combustion reaction? Why or why
not?
I think for A I would total all the g/mole of each of the atoms and combine it and divide by the total gram / mole of nitrogen. But I am not sure. As far as the other two are concerned I am completely lost.
58. If you look at nuclear equations in sources other than this textbook, you
may find that the subscripts have been omitted. For example you may see
an equation for a fission reaction written this way.
235U + 1n → [236U] → 87Br + 146La + 3 1n
a. How do you know what the subscripts should be? Why can they be
omitted?
b. Why are the superscripts not omitted?
Is the reason you know what the superscript should be is based somehow on the reactant? The reason you dont show is because it doesn't change? Not sure also not sure why you can't ommite in part b.
Any help on these two questions would be greatly appericated!
