Best way to collect precipitate from a beaker
« on: December 28, 2007, 02:32:51 PM »
This is kind of a dumb question, but let's say I have a solution of ethyl alcohol and an unknown compound. I need to isolate the unknown compound to identify it, so I boil off the alcohol and have the compound in my beaker. Is there a more efficient way to collect the dry compound than just scraping it out with a wire cleaning brush?

A spatula.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

Stir the solution really well and filter it and collect it in a filter paper; add more solvent and repeat until you have it all. Vacuum filtration helps speed the process.

I always wondered what loss you get due to adherence to the filter paper.
