Functional Groups of Cipro
« on: February 03, 2008, 09:09:32 PM »
I need to find out what the functional groups of cipro are. not by name but just by circling them on a diagram. Here is a picture of the diagram: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~genchem/0102/spring/6winn/images/cipro.gif

My guess is that there are 5, but am not sure.

The picture has the name, each functional group is identified, and numbered, so you know where.

I don't fully understand, but I came up with 4 functional groups:

the COOH
the C=O
the C-F
the N + Cyclopropane (triangle thing)

can someone double check this for me? Is there one more with the Nitrogens, and what exactly do I circle?

appreciate it

Look up what quinoline is, the basic molecule that is substituted at various points to give ciprofloxacin, according to the chemical name given.  See what's different, those are the functional groups.
