Determination of oil/grease
« on: February 05, 2008, 12:49:41 AM »
hi,

I would like to know how am I able to determine oil and grease in water sample?
Basically, I'm using a degreaser for cleaning my product, after which, it's subjected to great amt of rinsing, hopefully to remove most oil/grease and degreaser. Later, I'll collect the water sample to find out if there's any remaining oil/grease.

Wonder if TOC is a good method to determine the oil/grease content? In fact, read abt that UV or IR could be useful too. Does anyone has any idea abt this analysis..

Million thx

You could always try the qualitative tests...i.e. permanganate or liquid Br2...you may not have to do much.  you could use the biuret test for lipids, I'm pretty sure it's the biuret, could be wrong.

In order to suggest an appropriate analysis, we need to know why you need to do it. It is an effluent compliance issue? If so, what parameters must you comply with in your discharge consent? In our consent, we have to control the following:
Chemical oxygen demand (COD)
Settleable solids
Non saponifiable oils and fats
pH
temperature
Daily volume and flow rate.
