Aspirin
« on: February 17, 2008, 10:37:52 AM »
In industry what would be the percentage yield of Aspirin production?

I'm writing up my Lab Report for the synthesis of aspirin and want to include something about what i have learned from the experiment. If i could compare my results to that of the pharmaceutical industry i think i could better understand why i didn't have a higher yield(apart from obvious errors in lab practice).

I just cant seem to find anything on the process that synthesizes it commercially and their results.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

It is very likely that the yields of even the most mundane industrial processes are jealously guarded secrets.  The people in charge of the money don't like any info on how efficient or inefficient their process is to get out to investors.  Besides, the industrial process can be very different than your lab process.  Your organic chem book may provide you with theoretical yields, you should stick with those.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

I couldn't find much in my chem book, but i got a really good history surrounding the drug which has helped me with another part of my report. Thanks for the reply.
