nucleophilic base pH 7 ?
« on: February 19, 2008, 12:45:40 PM »
Hi folks,

does anyone of you know a base which is (strong) nucleophilic but on the other hand has a "low" pH ( ~ 7) --> does something like this actually exists ?

thx & greets

If you understood the Bronsted-Lowry Acid-Base Definition this question wouldn't really make sense.  How can you expect to deprotonate a weak acid with a strong base to leave a neutral solution.  If you are looking for bases that leave salts in solution what about NaH or LDA.  Clarifying your question after some research would help.

Your question still doesn't make sense.

Base doesn't have pH. Solution does. Solution may contain base, but its pH will depend on the concentration of the base and on the presence of other acids/bases.

How about HN3?  It has a pKa of ~4.5 but N3 is an excellent nucleophile.
