Conformational help please!
« on: February 25, 2008, 07:26:24 PM »
Let me rephrase my question! can anyone help me explain why in a molecule of acetic acid, one of the methyl hydrogens is eclipsed with the C=O bond? This question is driving me nuts and I'm not sure I can explain it properly.

start by drawing a couple newman projections of the C-C bond.

What do you think about the barrier to rotation about that C-C bond?
Knowing why you got a question wrong is better than knowing that you got a question right.
