Acid Base Equilibrium, multi-step buffer problem
« on: March 12, 2008, 08:26:17 PM »
a) What is the pH of a 2.0molar solution of acetic acid.  Ka acetic acid=1.8x10^-5
I worked this out and got the right answer which is a pH of 2.2

Parts b and c I am not able to get, part c is hard and my teacher doesn't expect us to get it, but I want to know how to get part b at least

b) A buffer solution is prepared by adding .1liter of 2.0molar acetic acid solution to a .1 liter of 1.0molar sodium hydroxide solution.  Compute the hydrogen ion concentration of the buffer solution.

c) Suppose that .1 liter of .5 molar hydrochloric acid is added to .04 liter of the buffer prepared in b).  Compute the hydrogen ion concentration of the resulting solution

b) Stoichiometry, concentrations, then pH from Henderson-Haselbach equation

c) Stoichiometry, concentration of an excessing HCl, then pH
