Acetal of Lactic Acid
« on: March 18, 2008, 05:10:43 AM »
Is the formation of Acetal possible with Lactic acid when "Lactic acid reacts with aldehyde (say butyraldehyde) in the presence of dilute HCl".

I know there are several examples in the literature of the formation of the cyclic ketal with acetone (or 2,2-DMP)/sulfuric acid on very similar systems.

Presumably the analogous acetals are also accessable via similar chemistry.

Note that if you use aqueous HCl any acetals that form will be transient as they will be quickly hydrolysed.
