Making Borax
« on: March 29, 2008, 01:31:23 PM »
I am looking for a way to make borax Na2B4O7. I know that it is an ore that is made by the repeated drying of seasonal lakes but I am looking for a way to create it in the laboratory. I have read that it can be synthetically produced using other boron compounds but I am looking for a specific or a couple specific ways. Does anyone know the reactants necessary or have any idea where I could find them? Thanks

How does it form in nature? I have read the vague definition, "repeated drying of lakes" but that doesn't give me any insight.

Thermal dehydration of sodium borate (in the presence of excess boric acid) comes to mind.

yup there are two ways which are as under

4H3BO3+Na2CO3 gives us Na2B4O7 +6H2O+CO2

and

Ca2B6O11+2Na2CO3 gives Na2B4O7 + 2CaCo3+2NaBO2
