Solvent in Soxhlet extraction
« on: April 02, 2008, 11:11:35 AM »
I am carrying an experiment to determine the % of oil in almond by Soxhlet extraction. Besides using petroleum ether, what else can be used as the solvent?

Think about what properties you want from the solvent.  How could your results be tainted if an inappropriate solvent was used?

Is methanol suitable for using as the solvent?

Dear Cmquer;

Suitable maybe, but satisfiable: ??
How ends the phrase?:  “Like dissolves  …. !

(Wikipedia doesn’t now much on “Eluotropic Series”, but much more on “Elutrope Reihe”!)

Good Luck!

How about Benzene? Could it be both suitable and satisfiable?

Dear Cmquer;

It is already a much better choice, but Benzene has one “small” disadvantage:
It’s quite carcinogenic!    That's why it is mostly substituted by “Toluene”!

A little simple spoken:  “Any” Solvent in the “Elutrope Reihe” from and above Acetone will do it, but not all are for the identical, same satisfying.
That’s why the phrase:  “Like dissolves like!” is not more specific.

Good Luck!
