I have a chemistry question.
I have to write a net ionic equation from each of the following compounds and water:
HC4H7O2
NaNO2
C5H5N
HC3H3O3
CH3NH2
Now this is what I have started....but I'm not exactly sure if I wrote the equations right.
HC4H7O2(aq) + H2O(l) <--> H3O-(aq) + C4H7O2+(aq)
NaNO2(aq) + H2O(l) <--> NaOH-(aq) + HNO2+(aq)
C5H5N(aq) + H2O(l) <--> C5H5NH+(aq) + OH-(aq)
HC3H3O3(aq) + H2O(l) <--> H3O-(aq) + C3H3O3+(aq)
CH3NH2(aq) + H2O(l) <--> CH3OH-(aq) + NH3+(aq)
And did I write them correctly? Are they all equilibria?
Went back and read the chapter...again...and I think I got the gist of it...
My net ionic equations would just be showing water dissocating to form either the hydronium ion or hydroxide ions and a H+. Like this,
H+ + C4H7O2- + H+ + OH- <--> H3O+ + C4H7O2-
Canceling out the spectator ions, the net ionic equation would be
H+ + OH- <---> H3O+
Does that sound about right?
