hi,

im trying to determine the concentration of NaOH by reacting it with Aluminium to produce hydrogen gas.

im stuck on the calculation to find the concentration of the NaOH from the volume of H2 collected, does anyone know of a way, or that could point me in the right direction at all?

i know the n=c x v/1000 and   volume of gas cm3 /24000 is moles right?
and that 2 moles of NaOH produce 1 mole of H2,  2NaOH --> H2, what calculation could i do please?
 ???

Briefly, you'll want to use the Ideal Gas Law, to determine moles of gas, given measured temperature, pressure, and volume.  You'll have to understand the limitations of each measurement, so you can make a good argument for your accuracy or lack thereof.

thanks, no i did realise there were quite a few threads already on the naoh determination, i was just wondering if the gas collection was a suitable method, or whether i should have been looking at a different option...

thanks for the quick response

Well, browse them all, and pick one.  They all have their advantages and shortcomings. I've listed them all, so new people with questions, new people with answers, and me, myself, would have a central location for all the ideas we've hashed so far.
