Synthetic Local Anesthesics
« on: April 29, 2008, 08:44:53 AM »
Dear Sir Ma'am

How can I attach a picture in here?

How can this conversion be made? By the grignard addition of BrMgCN to the ketone group? (How can a ketone's oxygen be turned into an -OH and -CN bond?

Consider the polarity of the carbonyl bond, and that of the cyanide ion, together with the Lewis structure for the latter. Does making a grignard of the cyanide ion make formal sense?

Where is that edit field?

For sjb:
I'm just asking how they've made this reaction. Does a ketone and a cyanide ion upon making Grignard give a hydroxyl and a nitrile?

Place where you type your message. You know, like a white box right in the middle of your screen ;)

I suppose to make a Grignard Reaction between the Piperidone and Br-Mg-CN. Is this way suitable for the reaction scheme?

You don't need to make the Grignard, as cyanide is already negatively charged. However, the formation may be reversible, so be careful.
