Eukaryote and Prokaryote RFs
« on: April 29, 2008, 06:19:41 PM »
Hey... I was just wondering, in translation, mRNA has three reading frames... how are these correct reading frames determined by prokaryotes and eukaryotes?

Prokaryotes use a Shine-Dalgrano sequence to indicate translation start sites.  Eukaryotic ribosomes are recruit ribosomes via the 5' cap and initiate translation at the first ATG codon downstream of the 5' cap.  In addition, it has recently been disovered that special sequence known as internal ribosome entry sequences (IRES) can initiate translation in a cap-independent manner in eukaryotes.
