Oxidation of sulphur in steel production
« on: May 23, 2008, 07:34:57 AM »
Hi

I was wondering why sulphur is removed via reaction with magenisum powder before blowing oxygen through the steel.  I have read somewhere that iron is oxidised in prefernce to sulphur, and somewhere else that sulphur dioixide forms, and so to reduce pollution sulphur is removed first.  Which of the two is correct, and if it is the first, please can you explain why this is?

Thank you
