Help identifying an unknown element in an equation
« on: May 26, 2008, 07:21:01 AM »
Zinc and and unknown element form a solid compound Zn3X2 which reacts in water to produce the aqueous ions Zn2+ , OH- and gas XH3.
How would I identify X which can be found on the second row of the periodic table?

LrH3?
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.

Zn3X2

This is a clue.  What information can you extract from this chemical formula?
