NAOH and decomposition and water alternatives
« on: June 25, 2008, 02:18:30 AM »
I want to make a solution of NaOH and water,How long would it be if kept airtight and out of sunlight before it would contain enough impurities to render it useless for typical uses.

Also for acid base extractions what is a good alternative for water or is there anything that works quite like it.An example would be for caffeine extractions or Scopolamine alkaloids where a non polar solvent is used with water.

Is there a value that can be used to reference whether a solvent will be soluble in another solvent?

Where do you expect these impurities to come from?

There are quite a few amides and alkaloids that can decompose with time and heat and break down into impurities. It would not be expedient to seal off all air. There will be some air inside the jar so im guessing maybe some sort of oxidation may take place or a similar decomposition into a sister molecule.

I guess I should have just said whats the shelf life of crystaline NaOH added to distilled non lab grade water.

NaOH doesn't decompose. As long as it is kept air tight you may store it for ever.
