i am an undergrad student. However, i am looking into some software to fiddle with and i came across ChemDraw. if you are familiar with it, can you please tell me if it is helpful in the grad field?

not that i am trying to get ahead of myself, rather i am looking for some sort of an application for chemistry other than actual reading/writing/sketching/laboratory

what i would ultimately love to do with software in general, is play around with 3-d molecular graphics. any feedback on any software suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

For an undergrad, isis draw is an equivalent drawing program. It is also free.

A step above ISIS is ACDLabs ChemSketch. Free version is nice:

Well... really late to this post but whatever.  Look into the software your undergrad offers, sometimes your school has a subscription to chemdraw and you can just download it from your school.  All that stuff is fine... if you have a reason to use it.  My school offered a class as an undergrad on how to use chemdraw and excel and such.  If you do get chemdraw they sometimes have tutorials as well. 

And yes chemdraw is helpful in the grad field.  Not as helpful as a crystal structure

ChemDraw also works for Mac. I'm not sure about the other software suggested, but my College is licensed for us to get free copies of ChemDraw. And usually there are analogues of windows specific free software for Mac, too.

Best drawing software I've ever used and am using, I compared it to many other types of free/not free software and haven't seen anything as intuitive, well loaded and almost bug free.
It has many useful shortcuts, hotkeys, options and what not.
It also knows many compounds by their common names (not only IUPAC notation)

Chemsketch is the best, draw whatever molecule you want, click 3-D Optimization and it sets it with its specific angles and everything in a 3-D format.
