without knowledge of the example to which you are referring, its not possible to say. however generally the toluenesulphonic acid (TsOH) catalysts serves the role of simple acid catalyst. TsOH is a strong acid, but can be handled as a crystalline solid and so is relatively easy to measure out accurately.

many reactions require catalysis by acid which involves a protonation step of a lewis basic chemical functionality.

TsOH can serve this role. is this the sort of catalysis your talking about ?

the toluenesulphonate salt is be produced when its proton is transferred to the lewis base. the catalytic cycle would complete by transfer of an eliminated proton back to the TsO- anion to regenerate toluenesulphonic acid

TsOH + reactant[:] -->  TsO[-]   +   reactant-H

reactant-H
  •    --> product-H

TsO[-]  +  product-H
  •    --> product[:]    +  TsOH
