huckel number and biphenyl
« on: July 25, 2008, 12:44:50 AM »
Can someone explain why biphenyl is aromatic if 1.) its not flat and 2.) it has a bad huckel number.  Arent those two characterstics that defined an aromcatic compound?

all u need is 1 aromatic ring and the entire compound is aromatic....so benzene is aromatic obviously and therefore the entire structure (biphenyl) is arommatic

Also, because the molecule is twisted (especially with substitution), then the two rings are not in conjugation.  The pi orbitals of one Ph ring are orthogonal to the pi orbitals of the other Ph ring.
