« on: August 01, 2008, 02:15:39 PM »
Can anyone provide a mechanism for the following reaction?

C6H5-CO-CHO + aq. NaOH -----> C6H5-CHOH-COONa

Thanks in advance.

Heh.  Nothing like digging out a paper from the 40s, eh?

Start by having the hydroxide attack the aldehyde carbon.  It's one step from there, through a series of arrows.
