Theoretical yield problem
« on: August 07, 2008, 03:28:15 AM »
Aspirin is made by adding acetic anhydride to an aqeous solution of salicylic acid. Equation is
salicylic acid acetic anhydride aspirin
2C7H603 + C4H6O3 -> 2C9H8O4 + H2O

If 1000g of salicylic acid is used with 2000g of acetic anhydride determine the theoretical yield of aspirin.

I got 1189kg but the answer says that it is 1300g

Well first up

Mole ratio from equation of salicylic acid and acetic anhydride is 2:1
Actual mole ratio is 7.24:16.9 which simplifies to 1:2.34
Divide ratio by coefficient to find the limiting reagent:
0.5:2.34
Therefore salicylic acid is the limiting reagent.
Therefore the theoretical yield of aspirin = n x M
=7.24 x Molar mass of aspiritin
=7.24*180
=1300.

Haha i just got it right.
Thanks for confirming that the answer was right.
