Please Help Me
« on: August 19, 2008, 10:14:54 PM »
Hey guys please somebody can explain me Konowaloff's Rule I'm not able to understand it as I read it from book....
 ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
It says

At any fixed temperature, the vapour phase is always richer in the more volatile component as compared to the solution phase. In other words, mole fraction of more volati;e component is always greater in the vapour phase than in solution phase. Alternatively, vapour phase is relatively richer in the component whose addition to the liquid mixture results in an increase in the total vapou pressure.

So please guys explain it in detail and if possible provide some pics to demostrate ::) ::) ::) ::)

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong please.

From reading the statement I reckon it means that if you have a mix of say water and ethanol, the vapour phase will contain more ethanol than water because it is more volatile.  (??)
Tonight I’m going to party like it’s on sale for $19.99!

I'm not sure what is confusing, it's a pretty straightforward paragraph.  If you have a mixture of 2 compounds, the vapor phase will have a higher mole fraction of the more volatile compound.

The second part states that if you add a liquid that increases the vapor pressure of the liquid, that is the one that will have a higher concentration in the vapor phase.

Can you clarify what exactly about the paragraph is confusing, as it seems like a pretty simple paragraph...
