Lab periods too long
« on: September 08, 2008, 09:29:59 PM »
Hi guys
How glad am I to intend the Organic chemistry class  ;D
However, lab periods seem too long and it's been a bit since boredom overwhelmed us. (not even kidding  :'()
Considering that some of you have already had some labs and know the available material during these labs, I ask for some cool things we can do to wake us up. For example, you have the funny sound with the hydrogen-in-the-buret-and-match-explosion thing (know what i mean? when the buret is propulsed to the back), ... but my short list is running to an end?

Anyone can help? :D
And I KNOW that I'm not in the right forum category, but couldn't find any other appropriate section...i figured that organic chemistry was my best shot to get answers :)

Not that I would condone any kind of safety risk, but there are a few things that are worth doing...

A coupla pellets of dry ice inside a tied-off glove makes for a great novelty balloon, and will pop whether you like it or not, you just wont know when.

If you close off the end of a 5ml syringe containing a pellet of dry ice with nescofilm (other brands are avaliable), you can pressurise the CO2, allowing its liquid state. You can fire the stopper at will (it goes about 10 metres), with a fairly loud pop. Watch out though, the syringe gets cold.

Get a conical flask with some water in it (you can add a dye to colour it for extra effect).   Leave it by the sink or preferably somewhere the lab demonstrators will find it.  Drop a couple of pellets of dry ice into it and walk away.   Watch as the demonstrator start to panic when they spot it  -  they wont know what it is - they will just see a flask of some coloured liquid left un-labled with smoke and bubbles coming out of it and will freak out.  ;D
Tonight I’m going to party like it’s on sale for $19.99!

Leave a container of almond oil extract open when you're working with cyanopolymers  ;D

(please please don't)

Along the cyanide line, here's a fun lab procedure for making HCN.  Be sure to read Note #1.

There's no way I'd intentionally make HCN without a respirator and an indicator tag.

Hey guys, thanks for replies.
Cant wait till we get some dry ice, the teacher's going to go nuts!!!
Hopefully, these will help me bear the lab periods!!
But I was just wondering if there is a site made especially for these kind of lab-stunts or something like that?

And thanks again dudes  ;D ;D

There are many sites for lab stunts. They are called hospitals. They have huge collections of fingers, eyes, ears, noses, hands and legs; no brains though  :P
