Optical methods, Surface Chemistry

I am having a hard time understanding what is the smallest surface feature that can be observed using optical methods.  I know that the smallest feature can be microscopic but what does that mean? Any help or where I can find more information is greatly appreciated.

I know that the limit on feature size (resolution) is limited by the wavelength of light used.  But how do I determine the smallest surface features?
