Mixture Problem
« on: September 20, 2008, 12:32:56 PM »
Hello!

I came across a problem in my chemistry homework that really had me confused this afternoon. The problem is as follows:

A mixture of 50.0 g of S and 1.00 x 10^2 g Cl2 is reacted completely to form S2Cl2 and SCl2. What is the mass of S2Cl2 formed?
The answer is 19.8, but I keep getting 105. grams. Can anyone provide some guidance about how I should approach the problem? I think that the SCl2 is confusing me, but I'm not sure how that works into the problem.

Assume that S2Cl2 was created first. How much was created? How much chlorine was left? Assume S2Cl2 reacted with left chlorine. How much reacted? How much was left?
