Total Number of Bonding Valence Electrons?
« on: September 28, 2008, 05:20:56 PM »
Hey guys,
I'm stumped with another questions, and I'd really appreciate any help...
The question reads, "what is the total number of bonding valence electrons in the dipolar ion form of gylcine, +NH3CH2COO-?"
I've got a lewis structure done up using the "formal charge method", and i thought i would take the number of bonds in glycine and multiply it by 2, giving me the # of valence electrons that have bonded.  I get 16 electrons, however my answer pool does not contain this question... (only 10,18,20,22,30)
Where has my logic de-railed?  ??? ???

Thanks in advanced

you're missing two hydrogens on your ammonium carbon

Also, your structure is also wrong in another way not indicated by nj_bartel.

You lose the H of the OH group. The C=O is not what gets a negative charge.

If you start with C-O-H and remove the H, what is left on the O?

HOLY @$%^!
I cannot believe I missed that.
I've been slaving away hours and the answer was right under my nose....
ARRGG!
Thanks guys,
who knows how long I'd have been at this...
I'll give it another try and see how it goes.

Thanks again.

sorry for the double post... couldn't find the edit button
I can just take my answer and add 4 electrons to it, giving me 20  :)
thanks again guys
