Isopropyl alcohol for Window Cleaners
« on: October 03, 2008, 12:13:41 PM »
Hello,

I am looking for some advice regarding the use of Isopropyl alcohol as an antifreeze in a pure water window cleaning system, I am a member of a window cleaning forum and a big debate is going on as to how effective it would be and at what concentrations it would be need to be added to stop water freezing inside the barrels and hoses, some advocates of using it say that 1/2L in a 650L tank is enough to stop freezing, I think that would not be enough can any of you chemistry guys/gals help settle an argument?

Thanks

It depends what temperature you're going down to.  If you're only going to 0 oC, then that 1/2 L would be fine.  If you're going to -200 oC, you won't be able to dissolve enough in the water to prevent freezing no matter how much you use.
