Working out porphyrin yields
« on: October 14, 2008, 06:55:50 AM »
How do you work out the yield for porphyrin ring systems? I added various aldehydes to propionic acid  and formed various porphyrin compounds. My question is how do you work out the theoretical yield and % yield of these structures? As i made around 0.4gof purple crystals but the theoretical yield was around 8g, thus giving me a % yield of around 5%, which is extremely low

There's nothing wrong in getting a low yield in itself, so I'm not totally sure what it is you're asking...

Post some working and we'll see if there's something you're missing.

10mmol benzaldehyde + 10ml pyyrole + 50ml propionic acid- ----> 0.48g meso tetraphenylporphyrin (FW 714g/mol)

Do you have a balanced equation for this?
