Butane Question
« on: November 06, 2008, 02:31:54 AM »
Hi I'm new to orgo, so I'm pretty lost. I'm trying to figure the chemical formula to this

I'm pretty sure the name is 2-methylbutane, but how do I figure out the formula? Is it CH3CH2CH2CH3CH3-?

Correct, the name is 2-methylbutane.  I'm confused, are you asking how you would write out the structure?

Then I would write it:

(CH3)2CHCH2CH3

Just practice writing condensed structures.  You can look that up in your book, or google "how to write condensed structures"
