Using Grignard reagent to form 1-hexanol
« on: November 17, 2008, 02:10:33 AM »
How can I form 1-hexanol if I have to use Grignard reagent and butylmagnesium bromide in one step of a synthesis?

I thought about reacting a methanal with butylmagnesium bromide. This would give a primary -OH, but that would only be a 1-pentanol. What do I have to do?

There is another type of compound that adds 2 carbons to it.  Look in your book for the chapter on grignard reagents, and see what they list, and you should find one that adds 2 carbons.

hmmm~  ???

You could add 2 carbon by using an aldehyde, but that will give you 2-hexanol...

Right degree of unsaturation, wrong isomer....
