Potassium Permanganate
« on: November 29, 2008, 02:32:32 AM »
hello all, my question is regarding the production of potaaaium permanganate form manganese dioxide, wikipedia leads me to believe that heating it to a molten state with a powerful base such as sodium or potassium hydroxide and adding an oxidizer (potassium containing if NaOH was used ) will form Potassium Manganate, this in turn can be mixed with an acid solution to form permanganate ions, i was wondering if you could confirm this or perhaps give a more detailed explanation.

Secondly if I have NaOH and a variety of potassium contaning chemicals (KCl, KNO3, K2SO4 etc) will they react with NaOH to form KOH instead ?

If i use KOH with the MnO2 then i can use H2O2 as the oxidizer and have one less chemical to remove to obtain pure KMnO4

I love wikipedia, but many things are too simplified. Typically it is more like:

  • Oxidation by alkaline fusion of pyrolusite in the presence of chlorates and perchlorates, with the injection of oxygen until the development of a fused green mass:
    2 MnO2 + 4KOH +O2  :rarrow: 2K2MnO4 + 2H2O
  • Electrolysis, in cells with typically nickle anodes and iron cathodes, of the solution obtained when the cooled green mass of manganate is leached with water and filtered through glass wool

Electrolysis leads to the formation of hydrogen at the cathode (2H+ +2e-  :rarrow: H2) while the manganate ions are oxidizes to permanganate at the anode (MnO42-  :rarrow: MnO4- + e-). Some dissociated KOH therefor remains in solution which, by lowering the solubility of the permanganate, brings about its precipitation to the bottom of the cell. It is the collected, filtered on glass wool, and carefully dried.

What do you plan on using it for? As it is a lot easier to produce the permanganate ion in solution and not make a pure product.

I was just looking to form some potassium permanganate for various experiments, if you could list a few simpler methods for production that i could extract the potassium permangante from after tat would be very helpful. thank you

Thanks enhas i was just making sure, although i am still curious of the the other methods you spoke of and which youd recomend for obtaining potassium permanganate.

Why not just buy some potassium perm. on eBay? I got a nice big bottle from drugstore.com many years ago, but they might not sell it anymore.

I haven't really found much to do with it, so it's just been sitting in the lab cabinet all these years.

PP is used as pool chemical. go to a standalone pool supply store(walmart wont have it...) and start looking shaking bottles to see if its a powder, then look at the ingredients.

if that doesnt float your boat then when you figure out how to make it, please tell me. i need PP also and if i can make it myself then thats all the better because i dont think this pool stuff im using is all too good.

or you can just go to Alibaba.com and buy a metric ton of it from china.

well i think the point is to make it, not buy it.

Aye. But, if you do get frustrated, I just recently bought a pound on ebay for 10 bucks. Can't beat that.

I believe NurdRage over on youtube has a video on permanganate prep, but it was crude, very crude if I remember correctly

In 1659, Johann Rudolf Glauber fused a mixture of the mineral pyrolusite and potassium carbonate to obtain a material that, when dissolved in water, gave a green solution (potassium manganate) which slowly shifted to violet and then finally red.

From wikipedia.

Does that mean that you can make KMno4 from MnO2 and K2CO3?

Anyone know how to get KMnO4, out of K2MnO4? aka get Permanganate out of Manganate
