Need Help Naming This Compound
« on: December 04, 2008, 11:19:47 PM »
I need help naming this compound. I thought it was 4-isoprpyl-2-methylhexanonal but apparently that's wrong. Anyone know what it is?

You need to name the compound so that the functional group has the lowest number. In the case of aldehydes, you need to always label the sp2 hybridized carbon as carbon 1.
The correct name would be 3-isopropyl-5-methylhexanal.

Thanks, I actually tried those numbers before, but I had some spelling errors. Silly me.
