You should really see what the painthinner consists of!
I think it shouldn't react technically since it is a solvent and thus would just dissolve the water as they are both polar.

Sometimes. Sometimes it is acetone as well. Or "Mineral Spirits". As we have to clean a lot of glassware in our lab, we actually by bulk fairly pure acetone from Sherwin William to do the bulk of cleaning with that, and rinse that acetone off in the end with more pure acetone from Fisher.
5 gallons of fairly pure acetone from Sherwin William (we were curious and did some testing of it) cost about what 4 liters of HPLC grade acetone from Fisher costs! For bulk cleaning, it is a no brainer.
