Organic Compounds Help =/
« on: January 04, 2009, 04:27:13 PM »
Ok so my teacher handed me a packet on Organic Compounds and expects us to teach ourselves it... I honestly have no idea about any of this stuff...

So i'll write down some problems on it if you can answer can you explain why it'd be like that on a sophmore pre-ap level?

Name this Alekene:
CH3CH2CH2CH=CHCH2CH3

Draw Complete Structure of 3-Hexyne

Name this alkyne:
Ch3C=CCH2CH3

Draw condensed Structure of Pentanal

There's a lot more but we'll leave it at that for now..

Without telling you the answers outright, here are some tips.

Alkanes = saturated hydrocarbons (no double or triple bonds), methane is the simpliest alkane
Alkenes = double bonds (ethene or ethylene is the simpliest alkene)
Alkynes = triple bond (acetylene is the simpliest alkyne)
-anal = aldehyde

Name compounds with the longest chain of carbons, for your problems count the carbons.

1 = meth
2 = eth
3 = prop
4 = but
5 = pent
6 = hex
7 = hept
8 = oct

Example:
CH3CH2CH=CHCH3 ----> 2-Pentene
CH2=CHCH2CH2CH3 ----> 1-Pentene
CH3CH2CCCH3 ---------->2-Pentyne

-anal = aldehyde
-anone = ketone

check for IUPAC rules -It is very easy to understand them .

condesed formula means you are not showing bonds But it helps to show atoms in relation to each other e.g. CH3CH2CH2CH2CH3arranged in the molecule .It is the condensed formula of pentane .
Figure out for pentanal .
