Molality
« on: February 06, 2009, 02:42:31 AM »
I like a few hints at how to solve this problem.  I don't understand where the text says,"Containing equal masses."

Simply put I am trying to figure out how I can get the moles of both glycerol and water since they are not given to me.  There molecular weight can be determined, but how can I use that to deduce moles?

Thanks for the help.

Equal masses means... equal masses? Like in "mix 1 kg of something with 1 kg of something"?

I'm still stuck, can someone please just help me determine the moles of solute?  Here is all of the information that I have so far....

How do you make the molecular weight of glycerol and of water to be 0.19 g mol-1 ?

Start with 2kg of solution. How much water? How much glycerol?

1 kg C3H803?
1 kg H20?

Try to visualize it like this.  I have a pound of lead bb shot.  I have a pound of feathers.  I put them together in a big box, that now weighs two pounds.  Would you expect to see the same amount of feathers and bb's if you looked in the box?
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

Molality follows.

Guys I still can't figure it out.  I'm just wanting to know this for my own leisure.  It isn't going to be turned in for a grade or something so could one of you just work out the first part for me?  I struggled enough already with this problem.

Thanks,

You have solution containing 1 kg of water and 1 kg of glycerol. What is definition of molality?
