Melting point of Mg
« on: February 08, 2009, 04:39:00 AM »
Normally the melting point of a group follows certain trend. But why Mg has lower than other elements in group 2? Can anyone explain this?

It is because magnesium has a different metallic structures from the other elements in the group:

>beryllium and magnesium have a hexagonal close-packed structure
>calcium and strontium have a face-centred cubic structure and
>barium has a body-centred cubic structure.

Check the crystal structures, Mg is hcp and Ca is cubic.
