Possible to break down sorbitol (Sugar alcohol)?
« on: February 10, 2009, 06:16:46 AM »
I have a question, lets say you have 50g of sorbitol in a 200ml liquid suspension and you want to remove it or make it in-active, are there any methods available?

When I say in-active I mean safe to consume but without the effects of drawing massive amounts of water into your digestive system. Keep in mind this is a purely hypothetical question, I am not planning on actually undertaking it, just curious if something like this would be possible.

Thanks

:)

edit: here is an image of the molecular formula if it might be helpful.

What's the problem with taking water into your digestive system anyway?  I must be missing something obvious, surely. It would be no worse than drinking a glass of water and then eating a few spoons of sugar no?

Anyway - couldn't you just evapourate off the water to get the sugar?

P:, it would appear the original poster is looking for a simple chemical way to alter a fundamental property of ingested sorbitol -- large amounts eaten absorb water from the bloodstream into the GI tract, and since sorbitol is non-nutritive, the sorbital -water persists, all the way to, well, the end. ;D

rolls:, most likely, there is no simple reaction to alter this phenomena.  I suppose the preparation to be injested could be formulated without sorbitol.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

LoL - Thank you Arkon!  I understand it all now! ;D  I'd completely missed the point.

Thanks Arkocon I suspected as much, I don't think the formulation is readily available without sorbitol hence the questions. Unless anyone else has a response I think I will discontinue my pursuit of solving the problem.
